The Ohio State University Veterans Lounge - Smith Lab Building
We transformed The Ohio State University’s Student Veteran Lounge in the Smith Lab building from a dated, underutilized space into a modern, welcoming home base for veteran and military-connected students. Guided by lived veteran experience and developed in collaboration with students, University stakeholders, and project partners, the design reflects the academic, social, emotional, and practical needs of those transitioning from military service to higher education.
The renovated lounge provides flexible areas for focused study, mentorship, collaboration, dining, conversation, and respite. Thoughtful improvements to the layout, furnishings, finishes, graphics, kitchenette, and modular glass wall systems balance openness with privacy while allowing the space to adapt to different activities and evolving needs.
More than an interior renovation, the project demonstrates the value of designing with a community rather than simply for it. The completed lounge strengthens an important campus support system, creating a place where student veterans can connect, recharge, and experience a lasting sense of belonging. It also reflects the enduring influence of military leadership and service: the mission may change, but service remains.
